ESTHER WILLIAMS

Charles Van Dell Johnson was a Hollywood actor, singer, and dancer. He was a major star at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and was the embodiment of the “boy-next-door wholesomeness that made him a popular star in the ’40s and ’50s.” In MGM films during the war years, he was considered “the red-haired, freckle-faced sailor, bomber pilot, or soldier, who used to live down the street.” He was known as a well-mannered guy, and his looks were sought after by many women.

Like Frank Sinatra, Charles was also a heartthrob who captured the heart of his fans and listeners. For decades, he continued his investments in the industry. He also earned the respect of many people when he replaced Gene Barry in a musical show, which proved that he was versatile in showbiz. When he passed away in December 2008, he was named one of the last surviving matinee idols of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
